Area of research: I am currently writing my thesis on British masculinty in frontier societies, focussing on British Columbia and Queensland from about the 1840s to the 1870s. I am interested in how British men practised their masculinity on the frontier. I am interested in British masculinity ie 'muscular christianity', 'godliness and good learning etc and men's roles as fathers and husbands as per the work of Davidoff and Hall, Tosh etc. I am examining the diaries, journals, letters and travel writings of men who emigrated to Queensland and British Columbia around the mid-nineteenth century to see how their masculine codes, behaviours etc translated to the frontier and what effect the frontier may have had on their masculinity.
Any advice, information, ideas etc would be greatly appreciated.
